The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced that citizens who obtained their PAN using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID on or before 1st October 2024 must link their PAN and Aadhaar by 31st December 2025. If they fail to do so, their PAN will become inoperative starting 1st January 2026.

All other PAN holders had a deadline of 30th June 2023. However, they can still link their PAN and Aadhaar by paying a penalty fee of ₹1,000.

Step-by-Step Guide to Link Aadhaar with PAN

Applicable if you missed the original deadline.

  1. Visit the Income Tax e-Filing Portal: https://www.incometax.gov.in
  2. Click “e-Pay Tax” under the “Quick Links” section.
  3. Enter your PAN, confirm it, and provide your mobile number.
  4. After OTP verification, you’ll be redirected to the payment page.
  5. Click “Proceed” under the “Income Tax” tab.
  6. Choose:
    • Assessment Year: 2025–26
    • Type of Payment: Other Receipts (500)
    • Sub-type: Fee for delay in linking PAN with Aadhaar
  7. Make the payment via Net Banking, UPI, debit card, or payment gateway.

Accepted Banks Include:
Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI, PNB, Union Bank, and more (full list available on the portal).

Note: It may take 30 minutes to 5 days for the payment to reflect. Once it does, proceed to the next step.

Step II: Link PAN with Aadhaar

There are two methods: with or without logging in.

  1. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal.

  3. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, click “Validate.”

  4. Enter your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and receive OTP.

  5. Confirm OTP and submit.
